The formula

For an isolated-margin position, liquidation price is approximated as:

Long: liquidation = entry × (1 − 1/leverage + MMR)
Short: liquidation = entry × (1 + 1/leverage − MMR)

where MMR is the maintenance margin rate (often ~0.5% for majors, higher for smaller coins).

Worked example

A long at an entry of $30,000 with 10x leverage and a 0.5% maintenance margin: liquidation ≈ 30,000 × (1 − 0.1 + 0.005) = $27,150 — about a 9.5% drop. The same position at 50x would liquidate near $30,000 × (1 − 0.02 + 0.005) = $29,550, only ~1.5% away.

The takeaway: leverage compresses your margin for error fast. To see your combined risk across multiple positions, use the effective leverage calculator or CryptoPatterns’ Risk X-Ray.

FAQ

Questions

How is liquidation price calculated?

For an isolated-margin position, a common approximation is: long liquidation ≈ entry × (1 − 1/leverage + maintenance margin rate), and short liquidation ≈ entry × (1 + 1/leverage − maintenance margin rate). Higher leverage moves the liquidation price closer to your entry. This estimate excludes fees and funding, and exchanges differ, so always confirm on your venue.

Does higher leverage mean a closer liquidation price?

Yes. At 10x, roughly a 10% adverse move can liquidate you; at 50x, roughly a 2% move can. That is why effective leverage across all your positions matters so much — see our effective leverage calculator and Risk X-Ray.

Is this liquidation price exact?

No — it is an estimate. Real liquidation depends on your exchange’s maintenance-margin tiers, fees, funding and margin mode (isolated vs cross). Use it to gauge risk, then verify the exact figure on your exchange.
